1099R received after filing

After filing our 2023 tax returns I received a 1099R.  It would have had no effect on our taxable income.  We are retired and have zero AGI.  Do I need to amend 2023 Federal and State returns?

If you are certain that it will have no effect on your return, such as the case where the Form 1099-R is reporting a direct rollover from one account to another like-kind account, then you should not file an amended return.  Keep the Form 1099-R with your records and make notes that it was not included as part of your filed return.

If the Form 1099-R is reporting something that would be included as income, but would not affect your bottom line taxable income, then you should amend your return to include it.  The IRS would see this as a case of not reporting all of your income and you would be contacted by them to correct the issue.

For more information about when it is appropriate to file an amended return, see the following TurboTax help article:

we have no way of knowing if adding it would result in a tax liability.
