I have prepared a 2018 tax return and it shows that I have a large refund.  I have not paid any taxes for the year 2018.  Is this a mistake.  My tax status changed this year to head of household with 3 deductions.  My daughter passed away in Jan of 2018 and my two surving grand daughters lived with all of 2018.  I have custody of the 17 yr old and she draws social security which i=I understand it is not taxed.

What type of income are you reporting on your tax return?  Social Security, Pension, Interest and/or Dividend income?  Or do you have earned income from work where you receive a W-2 or are you self-employed and receive a Form 1099-MISC for your income, or paid in cash only and do not receive any type of income statement.

You can have a tax refund from tax credits even if you do not have taxes withheld from your income.  But you must have earned income of some amount to be eligible for tax credits based on income, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit.
