Question

After I filed my 2019 taxes my employer sent me a corrected W2 with 12a code W changed from 2000.24 to 1500.24. Do I need to take any kind of action?

Yes. You will need to amend your return.

Click the link for steps to amend your 2019 tax return.

After you have begun the amendment, change the W-2 for the updated information.

The detail affects Form 8889. You can double-check that those details are updated on the PDF.

Thank you.

According to TT it looks like this process is a minimum of 5 months before I see my return. Does that sound right? Seems pretty excessive for them accidentally taxing me $500 more than they should have on an HSA.

First, the delay will not be 5 months. It will take a good while, but 8 to 12 weeks is more likely - and that is only because the IRS is deliberately conservative on dates.

Second, the IRS is understandably geared towards accepting tens of millions e-files at the moment. Paper processing (which the amendment is) will take second place until after April 15th. This does not mean that they won't process amended returns at all until then - just that there will be a backlog.

And, yes, your employer made a mistake that will inconvenience you. Unfortunately, there is nothing in TurboTax's power to reduce the wait for you.
