Question

Amend a return

I am seeing that I need to select "amend a return".  Where on the screen can I find this?  How do I get to that?  I have opened "documents" twenty times, downloaded the tax year, and nowhere do I see an option to "amend".

Am I losing my mind or just not seeing it.  I am using a Mac, so perhaps the screen is a bit different.  Thanks.

If you are trying to amend a return that you prepared using desktop software, open the program and then go to Federal Taxes>Other Tax Situations>Other Tax Forms>Amend a return

What about amending a 2024 federal return using TurboTax online?  There doesn't seem to be any way to do it.  I search for an answer, and two days ago (February 21) instructions were posting but they are incorrect.  I search for form 1040-X and it's nowhere to be found.

If you prepared your original tax return using TurboTax:

  1. Sign in to your account
  2. On the Tax Home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents
  3. Select the year you want to amend
  4. Select the Amend (change) return dropdown
  5. Select Amend using TurboTax Online
  6. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return

How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year?

Things to remember before you amend your return:

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
    • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
    • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment
