Solved

Amended my 2015 and 2016 returns to correct my filing status (per divorce decree). Result is that I owe/they owe nearly same. Can I send both returns without a check?

Yes.  But, for the tax return which has a balance due, penalty and interest will continue to accrue until paid.  If you are able to pay the balance due, I would include a check.  If you are not able to pay, the IRS usually applies the refund to the balance due.
