I sent an amended return by paper to IRS, they received but sent back without filing it. I did an amended return with turbotax and sent that and it said it was received. How long till it takes affect?

Amended returns can only be mail and can take 16 weeks to process. Did you mail the second time? Why did they send the first one back? Did they first get and process your Original return?

The original return was filed, but they mailed it back to me because they were confused on what I was trying to change.

Lets start over. Your original return is the 1040 return you can efile or print and mail.

An Amended return is a 1040X. You can only mail in a 1040X to change an original 1040 that has been fully processed and you got the first refund (or paid the tax due).

So what have you done? Did they process your real original 1040 return? What do you need to change? If you need to change it did you send them a 1040X or just another 1040?
