Question

Amended return and now I owe IRS

Two questions: I amended my 2018 return to reflect that no one is claiming me as a dependent (I accidentally checked the little box that someone was claiming me). It now says I owe. Does this seem odd? It seems I would owe less, not more, as an independent.

It says I need to mail in the amended return. Is this necessary if I no longer want to amend? I'm wondering if I missed something again in the amendment process which is why it is showing a balance due. Unfortunately, I can't review the amendment online.

You can review the amendment by viewing the Form 1040X.   Use the print center to print out a copy.   You have 3 years from the date you filed your return or 2 years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment.

If you started amending your tax return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment:

    1. Open your return if it isn't already open.
    2. In the left menu select Cancel Amend.
    3. Select Yes, I want to cancel my amended return and Continue.
