I filed my taxes this year and accidentally put that my mother claims me so I didnt get a huge deductible that i was supposed to get. That same night that I submitted my taxes I went back into turbotax and amended my return to get the deductible, Will i receive that deductible or do i have to wait for my return to process and then file a 1040x? I changed my return that same night and on turbotax it showed a change in my return upwards of $1,000.

Since you have already filed your original return, you will have to wait until the return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS before you can amend to change your dependent status and receive the additional refund amount.

If the original return is rejected, you can update your dependent status and any other errors on the return and resubmit.

If the original return is accepted and you have received your original refund, you will need to amend your return to change your dependent status.

Please see these instructions for amending a return in TurboTax Onlinehttps://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/5567856

You will follow the steps listed below to indicate that you are not being claimed by someone else:

    •  Log in to your TurboTax Online account

    •  Click Take me to my return

    •  Click on Personal Info and locate your name.

    •  Click "Edit" next to your name.

On the following screen near the bottom, you will find the area to click to indicate that you cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else. (screenshot attached)

Once you have finished amending the return, you will need to print and mail the amended return to the IRS. The IRS does not allow amended returns to be efiled.

After you have printed and mailed your amended return to the IRS you can track the status of the return using this tool (please wait three weeks after mailing the amended return before checking): https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/amended-returns-form-1040-x/wheres-my-amended-return-1
