Amended Return Error

Got a corrected 1099 from my broker.  First I copied over my original return to a new name, and reentered the corrected data.  Showed I was getting additional money back.  Then I went through the amended form process, and it showed I owed A LOT more money.  When through and found that Turbotax had said my original return had a refund a lot larger than what I got, and was exactly what my original return said it was.  I went and checked my bank statements, and found that it agreed with my return.  I don't know where Turbotax got that my original return got me several hundred dollars more than what I received.  If I would have blindly submitted the amended return, I could have ended up paying more in taxes rather than getting a larger refund.  I went in manually and changed the 1040-X to the refund amount I got on my original return.  I crossed my fingers and transmitted the 1040-X; if the software didn't give me bad info, I'll get like a hundred more in refund.  No way to contact Intuit; tried calling, but that was useless.

    your procedure was incorrect.

after you copy the original file and rename it,

    • open it
    • click AMEND
    • make your corrections, which should appear on Form 1040-X.

you can repeat this process to generate a second amendment (Form 1040-X No.2)

if what you submitted had incorrect results resulting in the wrong amount of tax.
