Question

Amended Tax Return and Recovery Rebate.

I did my 2019 taxes where I thought my parents would claim me as a dependent. Turns out, they did not. In turn I amended my tax returns as an independent single.

From my understanding, I am eligible for the stimulus. I know all claims are delayed in process.

BUT, when I file for my 2020 returns in the near future, towards the end of filing, should I claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for both the $1200 and $600, even if the 2019 claims is not done processing yet? Should I wait until the 2019 is done?

I suggest that you wait until at least January 15, 2021, the date when the IRS will stop distributing the second payments, before completing your tax return to be sure that you don't receive the second payment.  This will ensure that your return is as accurate as possible, and will not delay your receipt of your refund or Economic Impact Payment as the IRS is not expected to be processing returns by the 15th.

You will claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by answering the two questions about the stimulus payments that will appear at the end of the TurboTax interview.

The questions are in the section Federal Review.

Once the information is entered you will see your refund increase or balance due decrease, and TurboTax will enter the amount of the credit on Line 30 of Form 1040 for you.
