Amending 2019 federal return

I filed my federal e-return yesterday and then last night noticed I forgot to add in about $4,000 in medical/dental expenses and another $1588 in medical insurance premiums. I went into my filed return and clicked on amend return and got a notice about an amendment form coming out 2/27 and asking me to proceed in the meantime so I did. I entered the new info and the amount I have to pay did go down by about $500. However, this process took me all the way to the file e-return area and I'm not sure I'm supposed to hit that file button again for this new amended return or wait for the form (which was mentioned once and never again). Help!

Once your return has been accepted, you will not be able to make any changes until after your refund has been processed. Amending your return means filing a new form, 1040X.   You should not try to amend your return until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared. Amended returns do not “catch up” to your original returns and replace them.  They are processed as two separate returns.

An amended tax return, Form 1040X, can only be printed, signed, dated and mailed by you to the IRS, it cannot be e-filed. The IRS will take up to 4 months to process the amended tax return. Wait until you have received the tax refund or the taxes owed have been paid and processed by the IRS before amending the tax return.

On the Tax Home web page when the Form 1040X for amending a 2019 tax return becomes available there will be a link - Amend (change) return

Form 1040X is estimated to be available on 02/27/2020
