Question

Amending 2021 return, changing the apply refund to next year amount does not change the amount of tax due when amount applied to next year is increased or decreased

I amended a filed tax return to add a 1099r.

I had originally filed to have approximately $2k applied to next years taxes. After adding the 1099 I have a balance of $5200.

When I changed the $2k for next years taxes to zero it had no effect on federal tax due. It didn’t matter what number I entered for apply to next years return it didn't change anything.

The 2K has been received by the IRS as an estimate of 2022 taxes and can not be changed.

Ok thank you. I will file and make the payment.

On the amended return it shows $0 for the amount applied towards 2022 taxes so I hope it is not “lost”

The payment is not lost. Since there is not a refund listed on the amended return, it will not show anything being applied to next year. The $5,200 you owe includes the $2,000 that is applied to next year.

You could reduce your tax withheld or estimated taxes paid in during 2022 to account for the taxes you have prepaid.
