Amending a return - State not filed yet

I filed my federal return via TurboTax but I did NOT file my State returns. I held those back because I got another W-2 after I filed the federal return, so I knew I will have to amend. It reduces my refund by about $35.

I just received my refund for my federal return today.

Can someone help me with next steps? I am fairly clear about the federal return, file a 1040X with the new info, but my question is more around State returns. Do I file the original state returns, wait for those as well, and then refile them again with an amended Federal? Or do I amend the state returns now and file them with the corrections?

If you did not file your state returns yet, you can file them with the corrected information.  You do not have to file amended state returns if you never filed the incorrect returns.

I recommend going back into your TurboTax file used to prepare your Federal return, and update the numbers for your correct wages.  Once you have entered the correct information, you can go ahead and file your state returns.  After these returns are transmitted and accepted, then go ahead and amend your federal return.

You can prepare your amended federal return per the attached instructions:

Amend return
