Amending an accepted 2020 Federal return because of a dependent child error

I submitted my 2020 Federal return 3/11/2021 using TurboTax online with a $10K refund. Although the IRS accepted my return, it stayed "in progress" for more than a month. Another month later, I got a letter from the IRS noting my 2020 Federal return needed additional review.  After getting the letter, I spoke to my ex and realized we both took the same dependent child deduction. Her deduction was correct. Mine was not.

Today I started an amended 2020 Federal return to correct the deduction error. TurboTax deleted my $10K refund, which I did not yet receive. After searching the TurboTax discussion board, I learned the software assumes you already received your refund.

I did not!!

Do I go ahead and file the amended 2020 Federal return, which now shows a return of zero dollars? Or do I not submit the amended return and wait for whatever next step the IRS will take?

To avoid unnecessary delays, do not amend until your original return has been fully processed.   It's possible the IRS will adjust your return and you will not need to file an amendment.
