Amending Tax Return Not Working

I'm trying to amend my 2022 tax return.

Column A is supposed to be set and column B and C are the ones that you can make changes.

For the software,  Column C is set without allowing us to make any changes. Meanwhile, you can only make changes to Column A, with Column B making the +/- differences.

This is wrong. Update the software and fix the bug. Thanks.

I believe you may be trying to enter items directly on form 1040-X, the amended federal tax return. If so, you cannot prepare the amended return in TurboTax in that way. You must use the question and answer mode of the program to enter your changes and then they will populate column B and C. Column A should not have any changes, as that is what you reported on the original tax return that you filed.

The question mode of Turbo Tax 2022 for amended returns is broken. It fails to pull tax data from the original return after asking what changes you will make. Turbo Tax then fails its own checks because no prior return data has been populated and the 1040X is at that point useless and a mess. If you try to go directly to the 1040X form you can not update any columns other than column A which sort of stops anyone from trying to use Turbo Tax Form from within the original return to file.

The only work around I have found is to open up the 1040X form within the original tax return and click on the year being amended. At that point Column A and C will populate with he original return data as well as your personal information. Now, download the IRS editable PDF file from irs.gov and manually enter that data then begin working on Column B and Column C updates for what changed.

It's March 11 with no fixes from Turbo Tax so I'm not holding my breath that this will get fixes. One of the great things about Turbo Tax was the ability to easily do an amended return. The software team really botched it this year  - Good Job Guys!

You can e-file your 2022 1040-X. Please see this TurboTax FAQ for information on amending your tax return and steps to follow for success.

I am having a similar issues - I made a mistake on my original filing by having a wrong box check on an IRA.  I notice the issue after I filed.  I found the problem by unchecking the box.  I then went to do an amended return and the dollar amount of my return was set to the right number but the box was checked that I had unchecked.

When I unchecked it again it took my return to zero.  I don't see any options other than doing a new tax file.  But I am sure that will cause an issue if I file twice.

" I then went to do an amended return"

your procedural order was wrong.

you click AMEND, then you make changes.

You must start AMEND with your original tax return.

Do not submit a second 1040 tax return.

It would appear that the Turbo Tax amendment  process has started and I can't back up and fix the issue. I can't seem to get back to my original return. I go right into the amended return that has the error.   Not sure how to fix the issue

If you are having trouble filing an amended return, the page here is helpful on this issue.

Please let us know if you are still having the same issue. @whdw41a

For my case, I mailed my amendment and later realized that the original AGI in my 1040-X doesn't match what I filed previously. I can't understand how this happened. And it seems that I have no way to fix it as the original return seems to be gone once I started the amendment. I haven't heard back from the IRS yet. But I don't have a good feeling about this.

"the original AGI in my 1040-X doesn't match what I filed previously."

What other lines are not correct ?

You'll have to wait to find out what adjustments IRS makes.

then you can amend again if it is still not correct.

Second time, be mindful of the instruction: "or as previously adjusted by IRS"
