Amendment Form 8915

On my 2020 tax return, I took and early distribution from IRA due to COVID-19 and agreed to pay the taxes over 3 years which created a form 8915-E. When I filled my 2021 taxes last year, I did it before the new 8915 form was released. I am trying to go back and amend my 2021 return to account for the 2nd of the 3 tax payments. However when I go through the questionnaire about the 2020 early withdrawal it seems to be calculating my tax based on a separate non-disaster 1099 withdrawal on my 2021 return that was present when I filed last year rather than the 2020 1099 that was to be divided up amongst 3 years. Has anyone else had this problem? I have no idea how to get it fixed.

@wrfarmer

you have two choices.

A) continue to struggle with TurboTax Form 8915-F process.

B)

  • get Form 8915-F from the IRS and do it yourself . line 23, 24, 26 for IRAs.
  • use TurboTax to enter one third of distribution as "other income" on 1040. This will give you your new AGI and tax.
  • get Form 1040-X from the IRS and fill it out yourself or, use the TurboTax generated 1040-X, which should be correct if in Part III explanation you refer to Form 8915-F, not Other Income. Note: some have reported that TurboTax Form 1040-X does not come out correct for their amendment.

When submitting Form 1040-X, do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.  Therefore the "other income" trick does not get seen by IRS.
