Hello I’m trying to find out what to do since I claimed the American opportunity credit. I misunderstood what it meant. I have not received any payment from the irs. The IRS sent me a notice so I can confirm this credit. I thought it meant school expenses for your children throughout the school year on what you bought for them. I have never had this issue before and really need help on what to do!

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is a credit used for college students.  It has nothing to do with paying expenses for children in grades K-12.   The IRS will disallow that credit for you.  Did they request that you amend your return?   What does the letter from the IRS say?
