So I was never told about the AOTC until this year when I was trying to file. It’s my first year at a university bc I have completed classes at a community college in prior years and I have my associates degree. They told me I don’t qualify for the credit because I have completed 4 years of school already, but I have never claimed this credit to my knowledge. Can I still qualify for the credit?

There are two education credits:  The American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) and the Lifetime Learning Credit.  Even if you don't qualify for the AOTC, you may qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit.  See the following for information on both:  Compare Education Credits

The IRS also has an  interactive app, "Am I Eligible to Claim an Education Credit?" that can help you determine if you are eligible for education credits and deductions.
