I have an SSN. I want to apply for an ITIN for my wife.We have been in US only since Nov 2013. I want to apply - "Married. applying jointly'.
I read the forums that, i need to apply for ITIN by filling up the W7 form along with the attested copies of passport (proof that she's a foreign national), which is ok. I wanted to know, how long will it take to get the ITIN for my wife ? Weeks or Days ?

You need to apply for the ITIN together with your return and send it to the ITIN operations center.

See the instructions of form W7.

Form W7:

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf

Instructions for Form W7:

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw7.pdf

Once the ITIN is assigned, they will forward your return for processing and send you a letter with the ITIN.

Getting the ITIN takes about 6 weeks. Processing the return can take another month or two.

How and when can I expect to receive my ITIN?
If you qualify for an ITIN and your application is complete, you will receive a letter from the IRS assigning your tax identification number usually within six weeks. If you have not received your ITIN or other correspondence six weeks after applying, call the IRS toll-free number at 1-800-829-1040 to request the status of your application if you are in the United States. If you are outside the United States, call 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number).

Hello,

I filed MFJ with my husband who needed an ITIN. We recently received our tax refund but no ITIN.

What can we do?

Hi All,

I applied for the ITIN for my wife and kids on Feb 18th 2020 and filed my federal tax return along with it physically in the IRS office. Its almost 7 weeks and we haven't received the ITIN or the returns until now. Tried calling the IRS toll free number but the offices are closed due to COVID-19. Should I be worried ?

You can call the IRS toll-free at 800-829-1040 if you are in the United States or 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number) if you are outside the United States. This service allows you to check the status of your application seven weeks after submitting Form W-7 and your tax return.

Hi

I have to send my daughter's passport with W-7 application( to apply ITIN number) as well as my federal tax return. I wonder IRS Austin Service Center is closed due to COVID-19? I called IRS number but no one answer due to COVID- 19. If I send a passport, they will do process  W-7 application?

It’s going on the 10th week since I’ve filed taxes and for my wife’s ITIN. Ironically her SSN for work showed up before I’ve even heard anything from the IRS. So, I’m literally waiting for any sign that it was even received. I wouldn’t be worried though, just try any way to contact them.

If she has received a Social Security number for work you will no longer need an ITIN.  That is only used in the event you cannot get a Social Security Number.  So I would just go ahead and either wait or send an amended return with the Social Security number for her on it with an explanation that she has now received her Social and no longer needs the ITIN.  You can then also file the state taxes using that social.  From now on that is what you will use.  The Social Security number is for life.

@dodieh75

Did you have a question about the ITIN?

As you can see from the comments above, in the current situation, any manual processing (like issuing ITINs) will be slow. Only the IRS can tell you about any progress - if you can get them on the phone.

I know this issue might have already been resolved by now. But this link appears first when I google about ITIN delays. Anyhow this info is to help people waiting to hear on their new ITIN. First of all to get ITIN status please do not call the 1040 phone number. It is not correct. For ITIN inquiries, please call [phone number removed] (U.S. only) or for international, call [phone number removed]. I had to wait 30 minutes on hold but finally got an answer

How many days it took to get your ITIN?

July 14, 2020

Did any of you actually get an ITIN yet? I have not received any news on this.

I submitted my application in mid April. I received my wife's ITIN yesterday with notice date of Sept 11. Refund status still doesn't show anything. I will keep posting updates.

Now that the ITIN has been issued the return is forwarded to the IRS for processing ... paper return processing this year can take 4 months or more  so check the IRS site once a week until you see progress.

If you need to file a state return do it now ... log back in, scroll down and click on ADD A STATE to open the account then enter the ITIN in the MY INFO  and continue to the state interview.  When done choose to mail in the state in the FILE tab and the forms needed plus the instructions will be in the PDF file.

I have Filed for Federal Tax and Applied for ITIN by mail around July 10th. I haven't heard anything about ITIN. I tried to call IRS but every time call being canceled by saying due to high volume we can't take the call. Has anyone filed on July for ITIN and received response?

@Kollivamsi The IRS has been working on opening over 11 million pieces of mail that piled up in trailers during the pandemic.  It is possible that your envelope is still somewhere in the pile of unopened mail.  Sorry---but this will just take patience.

MAILED RETURNS

The IRS has just started to work through millions of mailed returns that have been piling up in trailers during the pandemic.  All you can do is watch the IRS refund site to see when your return makes it to the surface and goes into processing. Sorry.

Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continue:

IRS operational status and alternatives

Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

If  you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.  TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site. https://www.irs.gov/refunds

State returns have to be mailed to the state.

Due to Covid 19, many IRS offices and the Tax Advocate units still remain closed.  Most of the operations and processing time have been slowed down significantly.  Individual taxpayers that need an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) should still expect delays. Typically, a new ITIN gets issued within six weeks.  However, the current processing time for new ITINs appears to be over three months. Besides, the IRS office processing ITINs is currently not taking phone calls.

I'm really worried now. I need to get a large refund and also I have not been given the stimulus yet. I tried reaching out to them via phone several times. That is of no use at all. Is there any last resort for knowing the status update ?

If you already filed the 2019 return with the W-7 and are still waiting for the ITIN then do NOT file the 2020 return until you get the ITIN.

For check ITIN status you have to call: 1-800-829-1040 (IRS Phone number) Please be sure that you have all information with you, they can ask you any data from your application.

Try  calling to check the status of your refund at the IRS website.

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

800-829-1040

First choose your language.
Then 2
Then 1
Then 3
Then 2
When asked for SSN do nothing it will ask twice
Then 2
Then 4
You should then be transferred to an agent, but there is likely to be a long wait.

If they can't assist you can try the Tax Advocate in your state. most are working remotely and have a backlog.

My application was delivered on 4/7 and today I got a letter asking for identifying the foreign status.

I have included the original passport in my application.

Why are they ask for the extra documents?

I try to call but wait for a long long time (over an hour) without getting a representative.

Did they lose my passport?

All you can do is call the number on the notice ... try right before 7 am your time.
