Billing Notice - Why are you billing me?

I so extremely disappointed in readling my email from Intuit Turbo Tax today, that my account would be debited because notification was received from the IRS that my refund was not yet issued or has been reduced. Well...I am also super agitated and disappointed that my refund is NOT yet issued, although it was filed in April. There is absolutely NO WAY to contact the IRS and get a response about the delayed processing of refunds. The definition of insanity...doing something the same way, over and over and expecting different results; this is the IRS refund-checking process.  And, to add misery to the madness, I get your email that my account will now be debited for the tax preparation fee, with a comment that there was language in the Agreement that my account could be debited if there was an outstanding balance by 7/19. I read, and, reread the Refund Processing Service Agreement and there in NO such language. Shame on you. Hope this attempt, on your behalf, to find relief from the IRS insanity is worth losing customers.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for payment of the account fees - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/charges-and-fees/help/why-was-my-bank-account-auto-debited-for-turbotax-fees/01/26102

INTUIT TERMS OF SERVICE FOR TURBOTAX ONLINE TAX PREPARATION SERVICES - https://turbotax.intuit.com/corp/license/online/

5. THIRD PARTY SERVICES

If you sign up for the Refund Processing Service which may enable you to deduct certain fees and any applicable tax from the proceeds of your tax refund, you authorize Intuit (and its third party processor) to debit these amounts (excluding the Refund Processing Service Fee) from the bank account you identify as your Direct Deposit Bank Account in the event that you do not receive a tax refund that is sufficient to pay for them or in the event that your tax refund is delayed. Note that the Refund Processing Service fee is payable to the bank whether or not your refund is large enough to cover your TurboTax fees.  You should evaluate all Third Party Services based on your own assessment and review of their terms and conditions.

Just pay up front then.  (You paid an extra $40 for the privilege of paying up front.  Assuming your refund is paid in 60 days and your turbotax fees were $100, that's the equivalent of a short-term loan for $100 at 240% interest.)

I agree intuit isn’t desperate for cash and just because the irs is dragging their feet intuit decides hey we’re greedy we can’t wait. I’ll never use TurboTax again or any online app if this is how they do business I’m done with it. Hope you’re happy intuit you’ve lost a customer who has used you a lot.

Just a word of warning -

Regardless of which tax preparation software vendor you use, if you are offered the option to pay the account fees from a tax refund, they all will have caveats in the agreement where they can access your account to pay for the fees if the refund is reduced or delayed.

So do NOT use that option.  Pay for the account fees up front with a credit or debit card so this situation will Never arise.

don't you people think if people could pay upfront to do their taxes, they would have? it's pretty obvious people choose to have it taken out of their return because that's when they'll have money to pay it. It's hilarious that when using you guys to file my taxes i was told none of this would happen. if there were going to be delays, and reduces and such, why not tell us that? nope. just file our taxes, take our money and we can just get bent? crazy to me that it's been 6 months and my refund is still "processing"..

then you guys wanna sit there and copy and paste your CoC and ToS and whatever else, like everyone reads that crap everytime. Hmmm, maybe your "experts" could have given us a heads up? nah, play it shady and corrupt as all get out and then send en email saying you want your 45$... have fun taking those funds from an account that has no money in it because no refund THAT YOU PEOPLE DID has shown up yet. I will not only never use turbo tax again but i am making it my mission to make sure no one around me uses you, people, either. we have to wait an "x" amount of time because of a multitude of issues that could have happened, one being mistakes done on your side. i had you my w2... ONE FLIPPING DOCUMENT and you morons screw it up so now i'll probably never see my refund. but no worries, you all up in my emails about that 45$. I can tell you rn, you people will not receive a cent from me. Corrupt apes.

I also received this msg as well and I also read the agreement from when I filed and didn't see anything about being charged if it wasn't done within a set time period. I checked my return status on irs website and it says that it is still being processed. I filed on April 2nd, 2021. In my opinion it should not take this long to process a refund. Nor do I understand why I'm being made to pay a penalty for something that the IRS is responsible for. Why aren't they made to pay the penalty charge instead? I'm not the one that is responsible for when my refund is returned or within a set time frame. It's another way for them to make a dime at the expense of the hard working American people instead of those who should be held responsible.

What Penalty are you paying?  It just the regular Turbo Tax fees.  When the IRS finally sends your refund they won't take the fees out again.  Except the extra  $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California) .

I was charged $100 fee for filing my return. And the email I received said that my account was going to be charged a fee of $36 (I believe that was the amount. I know it was around that much) on 7/9/21 if the initial payment for filing my return wasn't paid when I opted for the filing fee to be withdrawn from my return automatically. My whole question is why are we being charged for the returns being delayed when my status still says its being processed but there is no estimated date of when it will be done. It says nothing about it being reduced or altered in any way. So what is the $36 charge that I received an email about if I don't pay by 7/9/21? Is it saying that I don't have to pay the $100 filing fee but instead just the $36? I'm not understanding this at all. If I'm mistaken about it or something then I will gladly post a retraction about my original post. But the way it seems to me, I'm being charged $100 to file my taxes, and an additional $36 bc the IRS hasn't gotten my return processed in a set time.

Opted to have Turbotax fee deducted from my refund. Now billed by Turbo for fee that I thought was paid.

You asked for the fees to be paid with your refund ... but if the refund has been  delayed ...

Are you referring to an email you received from TurboTax informing you of an upcoming auto-debit for TurboTax fees?  If so, and if you can't pay the fees now, you may be able to ask them for a deferment.

If you chose to pay your TurboTax fees out of your Federal refund, and if your Federal refund has been delayed unusually long at the IRS (or if it's been reduced), after a certain number of days TurboTax will want to be paid.  They likely started sending you emailed bills to pay.  If you don't respond by either paying or asking for a deferment, they will ultimately debit your bank account.  If you wish to ask for a deferment, you need to do so quickly.

See this FAQ that explains the process.  The first paragraph of the FAQ has a special phone number if you have a question or have a hardship and need to ask for a deferment.

Hours are 5AM-5 PM Pacific (8AM-8PM Eastern),  Mon-Fri.

If you need to ask for a deferment, you should call them as soon as possible.  Once they actually start the debit process, they say they can't stop it.

I think that I'll try a different program next year!

@Tripp920 Your post is not really "on topic" for this thread which is mostly about folks who are receiving notices because their TurboTax fees are being deducted from their accounts when they have not yet received federal refunds.   They somehow did not understand the agreement they signed that said TurboTax could deduct those fees if their refunds were late.  That is a separate issue from the one you seem to be upset about.

You are upset over having a $25 state e-filing fee.   That is a standard fee incurred when you have the CD/download and you e-file a state tax return.    The CD/download includes the software to prepare the state return but there is an extra fee to e-file that state return.   You can easily avoid that fee by printing and mailing the state return instead of e-filing it.

I have already informed my banking institution that you are not authorized to debit my account. Your deal with using your system was that you would receive your parent out of my refund...not out of my checking account. If I have to wait for my money...

So should you. If this comes to pass I will file a complaint with the better business bureau and social media on your practiced and let's see how much trust you lose in people who may consider using your services. It is not your money until the irs issues me my money

Sure...add or change the agreement when it suits you...that was not a part of the agreement I signed. My fee is and was to be deducted fr my tax refund...NOT ft my bank account...if my bank account is debited I will file a complaint with the better business bureau and I encourage others to do the same

I received the same letter in the mail and I was totally disgusted.   I have used Turbo Tax for years and this is my last year.   They want to take money from us that we haven't even received yet.   Turbo Tax is no different than any other organization/company in this country today - money hungry and it totally disgusts me!!!

@beehome1

You do not have to use TurboTax ever again if you do not want to.   But you need to be aware that no matter what tax software program you choose to use in the future ---- when you choose to have the fees deducted from your federal refund there will always be a fee for that choice, and there will always be a stipulation that you have to pay your fees within an allotted amount of time whether your refund arrives or not.   So avoid that situation.   Pay your software fees upfront.

And next time---see if you qualify to use any of the free filing services offered on the IRS site:

https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

And-----those emails give you a number to call and delay the auto debit for awhile:

If you’re in need of assistance, call us by the Tuesday prior to your debit date at 1-888-808-1723 to speak with a trained specialist and mention “auto-debit”, or visit TurboTax Support.
