Question

Can I amend my return after Audit notifcation

I filed my taxes in April. I claimed the American Opportunity Credit and did not realize this would be my 5th year claiming it.  I received an audit notice in regards to the credit.  Can I amend my taxes to take the credit off?  I tried calling the IRS, but was on hold for 3 hours and no one ever answered.

The IRS will probably change it for you.    Do not amend unless the letter and IRS instructed you to.    An amended return in response to an audit letter must be sent to the address on the letter and include the case number.     If you just send an amended return then it will take about 6 months to process and never get to the department doing the review of your tax return.
