Can I amend previous tax returns as I did not know I could deduct medical and dental expenses?

    Yes.  Generally, to claim a refund, you must file Form 1040X within 3 years after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

    Keep in mind, to claim medical and dental expenses you have to itemize deductions (as opposed to using the Standard Deduction).  Also, the deduction for medical and dental expenses is limited to the amount that exceeds 10% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).
