Can I ask for direct deposit for Virginia State refund after paper check is already issued? Can’t cash with both names on the check.

We file as married filing joint. We had a small offset in the state, so we were issued a paper check in both of our names instead of getting a direct deposit. My husband is not able to come with me to cash or deposit the check. Can it be sent back and a direct deposit issued instead? Are there any other options?

Your husband doesn't have to go with you to deposit the check. You and your husband both sign the back of the check. Then you take the signed check to the bank and deposit it. Or deposit it at an ATM.

In the unlikely event that there's a problem with the deposit, explain your situation to an officer at the bank and ask them what you can do.

You got your refund. The check is your refund. I doubt that you can send it back and ask them to pay it to you in a different way. But if you really want to try to do that, call the Virginia Department of Taxation and ask them it there's a way to do that.
