What do you mean "refund on a receipt?" do you mean claim a deduction? what kind of receipt?

it is a receipt for payment to a lawyer, but was not from my credit card

You should consult a tax advisor (CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney), but you may find this article interesting.
