Question

Can I get 2020's amended tax refund (which I never received) on 2021's tax return filing this year?

When I filed for the 2020 tax year, I forgot to include unemployment pay as an income.  This was paid for reduced work hours due to Covid, I believe they said it was part of the CARES act.  These payments had 10% taken out for taxes.   I realized my mistake and filed an amended tax return on 4/9/2021.  I received the refund for the un-amended return.   Turbotax says I should have received a additional payment of $966 for the amended return, which I have never received.  After several calls to the IRS they always say they are just behind schedule, but its been almost a full year now.

Each tax year is separate.  No, you cannot get the money you are expecting from 2020 as part of your 2021 refund.    There is no place to enter anything on your 2021 return about that.

The IRS is still working on millions of amended returns.   Sorry---you will have to keep waiting.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:
