Can I get a partial refund and leave the balance for next year's taxes? I have the same issue with both federal and NY State returns.

Before you file 2018 you can go to "Other Tax Situations" and click on Additional Tax Payments>Apply Refund to Next Year on your federal return. You can apply all or part of your 2018 refund toward your 2019 tax due. Not familiar with how the NY forms works, but go through the screens carefully when you prepare your NY return.
