Can I hold a check received today until next week and claim it on next year's taxes?

To add, the IRS gets copies of all W2's & 1099 forms, they match what income is on your tax return to the information they receive. It would cost you a penalty & interest if you did not claim the income earned in 2016 on your 2016 tax return.

No. You have actual receipt of it in 2016, so must claim it for 2016.
