Question

Can I Still Amend Tax Return During COVID-19?

Through Turbo Tax, under the question "Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return" I accidentally chose YES. Then subsequently filed my 2019 taxes. I've already received my refund.

During COVID-19, is the IRS still accepting amended returns for my 2019 taxes? I understand this needs to be done through paper/mail and the process takes up to 16 weeks. Once I claim myself as an independent and my 2019 return is accepted, am still able to still receive the $1,200 stimulus check down the road?

Kindly offer next best steps. Should I amend ASAP?

Thank you.

as long you are confident no one CAN claim you, but didn't then amend.

The stimulus payment will settle up after that .  This is your worst case scenario:

  • The stimulus payments are really based on your 2020 tax return (income, dependents, etc).
  • The IRS is using either 2018 or 2019 – whatever is available  - to ESTIMATE that payment
  • When you file next year there will be a “settle up” section on the tax return.
  • If you are due more stimulus (and this would include where you simply never received it), you will receive it through the 2020 tax filing.
  • If you received too much, by law, you are not required to return it

I am certain no one else will claim me as a dependent. So, although the IRS is discouraging sending in paper mail, should I still send my 1040x ASAP?

Do you know if the IRS will still process this even though it is through mail?

Thanks.
