You may be able to claim this child as a Dependent if all of these qualifications are met

  • He is a citizen of the US
  • He is related to you
  • He was under age 24 and a full-time student at least 5 months during 2018
  • He lived with you more than 1/2 the year
  • He cannot be claimed as a Dependent by anyone else
  • He is not filing a joint return
  • You provided more than 1/2 of his support

If you meet all the qualifications to claim this Dependent, they can still file their own Tax Return, but cannot claim himself. As he walks through the TurboTax interview process he will need to answer "YES" to the question "Someone else can claim me as a Dependent" and "YES" to "and this person will claim me on their 2018 Tax Return" so that you can claim him on your Tax Return.
