Question

Can you re-file for a previous year?

I filed my 2018 return last year, and this was the first return I've had to file in years. After I e-filed last year, the IRS sent me an identity verification notice. I went to the site they said to verify my identity, but it kept saying it didn't match what they had on file. Fast forward to eventually forgetting about this, I tried again in January 2020 to verify my identity with them, and it worked. But now it doesn't look like they have my 2018 return anymore. Anytime I check where's my refund, it shows as though I never filed last year. How can I re-file my 2018? Do I need to just print it off & mail it in, or can it be e-filed again? Turbotax is showing everything as accepted on their end, but it doesn't match on the IRS end.

Your only option is to print , ink sign and mail in the return.

The IRS received that 2018 tax return so there is no need to re-file the return.  You will need to contact the IRS and speak to an agent to find out the status of any federal tax refund for 2018.

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
