Once your return has been filed it depends on if its was accepted or rejected by the IRS.

If you have already filed your return and it has been ACCEPTED by the IRS, then the bank information (or refund method) cannot be changed.  It is actually designed by the IRS this way on purpose as a taxpayer safeguard to protect refunds, so that someones return can’t be accessed after the filing and their bank information changed in order to divert their refund.  The IRS will attempt to deposit to the bank on your return.  If this bank account is closed or IRS is unable to deposit it, then they will convert your refund to a paper check and send it to your address on your tax return.

So, they will convert to a paper check automatically and you won't have to do anything, but it might delay your refund by a week or two.

If you have already filed your return and it comes back REJECTED (you will usually know within 48 hours of filing), then you will be able to change it (use the steps below and attached screenshot).
  • Go to the File tab
  • Select Step 2
  • Follow the prompts and you will be able to change your information
