Child Tax Credit / Amended return - what now?

I filed an amended return for my 2020 taxes, not realizing that would put a full stop on any child tax credit payments I might have otherwise gotten. Ok fine, not what I wanted to hear, but I roll with it. File my taxes for 2021, and of course my amended 2020 return STILL has not been processed - so, of course I did not get the child tax credit with my 2021 return like every article I have found searching online says is the solution to my issue. The amended return was finally (!) processed after a year of waiting... but what in the heck do I do to get the child tax credit now? Am I just SOL? Another amended return?? (cringe) help....

You are not going to get the 2021 child tax credit payments based on your 2020 return or your amended 2020 return.   You get it now by claiming your child(ren) on your 2021 tax return.   You enter your child(ren) as qualifying dependents --making sure to enter their Social Security numbers which are valid for employment.  Answer the questions in the Child Tax Credit section to enter the amount that you did receive for advance payments before they stopped.   The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive for your children under the age of 18 will be on line 28 of your Form 1040.  Then it will calculate down and either become part of your total refund as shown on line 35a or it will reduce the amount due that is on line 37.

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.

The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.   Then it will calculate down to the refund you see on line 35a or the tax due on line 37.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.
