Confused on how to Amend

I received a letter from IRS that they are holding my refund because there may be errors on my return. I am trying to amend on TurboTax because there were some errors. The fixed info decreases my refund. Turbo tax is assuming I already received my refund so the amended return says I owe money. How can you do an amended return on turbo tax that shows you never received refund?

Do NOT amend while the IRS is working on your return unless the IRS sends you a letter asking you to amend, or it might delay your tax processing for months.

You should *wait* until your return has been processed and you receive your refund or conformation that any tax due has been paid. (If you file an amended return while you first return is being processed it can cause extended delays for both returns if two returns are in the system at the same time). In addition, if the IRS makes any change on your original return, you might end up having to amend the amendment – a sticky process that can take a year or more).

IRS did send a notice 3/2 (didn’t receive it yet but I spoke to IRS via phone call) and she said refund is on hold for 60 days because there could be errors and I should look through it for errors. I asked her what I should do if I notice the errors and she told me to amend it. So how can I amend it via turbo tax without turbo tax calculating having me already received my refund? Or do you think IRS meant for me to wait to amend after the 60 days? But if that’s the case why would she tell me to look through for errors if I have to wait 60 days for them to review everything and find the errors ?

It would probably not do any good to amend now because it takes the IRS 4 months to process an amended return. I tend not to put to much faith in what the phone bank people say - talk to 3 of them and get 3 different answers. Telling you to amend to correct error is a standard "boilerplate" answer. Of course, you should amend to correct errors, but that does not meant that you need to amend *immediately*. You have 3 years to amend to correct errors.

If you amend now before receiving any refund and the IRS makes changes that you do not know about then you might need to amend the amendment which could take a year to do.
