dependent child causing return rejection

My child's return, which has been submitted and his refund received, shows that he is being claimed as a dependent on another person's return.  On our return, we list him as a dependent.  After filing electronically, our return is rejected.  The message, in TurboTax, reads: "A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' or 'SpouseClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked.  This return has been rejected by the IRS because you claimed a dependent on your tax return, but this dependent has also filed their own tax return and did not indicate they would be claimed as a dependent on another return."

I have verified all entries on both returns.

Obviously someone filed a tax return using your child's SSN, not as a dependent, but as the taxpayer or spouse. It could have been an error in entering their own SSN, or it could be a fraudulent tax return. In any case, there is nothing you can do except to print your tax return, sign it, and file it by mail. The IRS will sort out the conflict. You might get a notice from them asking for information.
