Question

Did I itemize my deductions if my line 9 number is different than what Turbo Tax says could be there? I said it isn't the same but they said I filed otherwise last year.

My number is different than what Turbo Tax is saying are the standard numbers that can occur on line 9 if I took the standard deduction. However, when I say that I must have itemized my deductions, they say I filed saying otherwise last year but I can't imagine myself messing that up. Could being claimed as a dependent when I filed as independent have affected this number without me knowing? I feel I'm doing this right according to the instructions from Turbo Tax, but I don't want to get in trouble for looking like I falsely filed last year.

What are personal itemized deductions?

An itemized deduction is an expense that can be subtracted from adjusted gross income (AGI) to reduce your tax bill. Itemized deductions must be listed on Schedule A of Form 1040. Most taxpayers have the option to either itemize deductions or claim the standard deduction that applies to their filing status.

Examples of Itemized Deductions

  • Medical expenses.
  • Property, state, and local income taxes.
  • Home mortgage interest.
  • Charitable contributions.
  • Investment interest expense.
  • Miscellaneous deductions.

If you claimed some or all of the above deductions and they totaled more than $12,400.00 then you most likely Itemized your deduction.  However, if you did not have more than listed as a Standard Deduction, below, then you are automatically changed to Standard Deduction

Standard deduction

Filing status2020 Standard Deduction

Standard Deduction Amount

Single$12,400

Married filing jointly & surviving spouse$24,800

Married filing separately$12,400

Head of household$18,650

Your question indicates this might be your first time filing or filing as an independent who might be claimed on someone else's return.  Most likely you claimed the standard deduction.
