Question

Do I have to file a 1099-G form? I filed my federal but just received a 1099-G form in the mail. I have no idea what this is! Do I need to amend my return?

It depends on the type of income reported on the 1099-G form.

This form is used to report payments from a government agency such as unemployment, paid family leave, or a state or local tax refund from a prior tax year. The 1099-G is also used to report less common sources of income, such as taxable grants, agricultural payments, and others.

First check which boxes have figures in them. The most common is a figure in box 2, which a possibly taxable state or local tax refund.  If you itemized your tax return last year and you receive a state tax refund, it may be taxable on this year's return. If that is the case, you may need to amend your return.

If you have a figure in box 1, that is unemployment compensation and you do have to include it on your tax return.

Boxes 5 through 9 are for less common income like taxable grants.

If you need to amend, you will have to wait about a month as the amendment form is not available until the end of February. Click here for amendment help.
