Yes---if you used the wrong software to file a tax return, you will have to amend IF the tax return was accepted and processed.  But what happened?  Was the return accepted?

Check your e-file status and post back for further help.

Wait for the return to be processed and then you will have to amend.  Best guess---did you use the current online program that is only for 2019 and put income from some earlier year on it?  If that is what you did, when you amend you can remove the income you entered and use your 2019 income instead.

But do not try to send in an amended return yet.  That will just confuse the IRS more and delay everything.  They might catch your mistake--so wait to see what they do with the return.

How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

Meanwhile---if you needed to file for an earlier year:

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2016, 2017, or 2018 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

If you entered 2021 tax data on the 2022 tax return then you will have to wait for the IRS to either accept or reject the federal tax return.  If rejected you can correct the tax data for tax year 2022 only.

If accepted you will a have to amend the return.  There is also a possibility that the IRS will send you a notice since your tax data on the 2022 return does not match what the IRS has for your income.

An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
