Do I have to re-enter data on desk copy of turbotax to amend a pdf file in order to amend a 2016 form?

It is best to reenter everything from scratch and when the return is as you originally filed then and only then start the amendment process. If you feel comfortable you could switch to the FORMS mode and enter the 1040X column A figures and then start the amendment process.

Did you use TurboTax? You need the tax data file ending in .tax2016 to amend. Did you use the Online version to do 2016 or the Desktop version? If you used Desktop program you should have the .tax2016 file on your computer. If you used the Online version you should be able to download the .tax2016 file.
