Do I have to wait for a notification for amendment?

Hello Everyone,

I made a mistake when I am filing. I filed my taxes with my spouse jointly. But we are married in 2022. That was a mistake and I thought we were supposed to file amendments. I already received my State return and paid my federal due.

I called TurboTax customer service. Somebody connected and I shared my screen, I am told that We need to wait for a letter from IRS that notifies me, we shouldn't file jointly. I highly doubt this. I am going to call again but I wanted to ask the community before.

Do I have to wait for government notification?

You do not have to wait for notification to amend your tax returns- it is only advised to wait until the original return is processed. You can amend to change your filing status, just be sure to include a description in the reason for filing section.
