Do I have to wait for my state to direct debit my taxes due before I can finish filing

The state is not going to debit your tax due UNTIL you file the return. If you have not filed, the state has not received anything yet.   Is direct debit one of the ways your state will accept payment?  Read your state instructions carefully.

 

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.
