Question

Do I need to file a whole new income tax return if I made a mistake on the one I have submitted. The IRS sent me a notice with an error found on my tax return.

You cannot file a new return when one is already in the hands of the IRS.  The IRS letter will tell you what the IRS changed on your return.  The letter should also tell you what to do.  If the IRS already changed your original return then you do not send them another one.  Read the letter on what to do.

Use the procedure to correct the mistake as recommended by the IRS letter.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a 2021 tax return originally completed and filed using TurboTax - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-2021-return/L1gEU4G3X_US_en_US?uid=l4x8p7ow

@barbara0944- - what did the IRS state? did they say they would fix the error?

the most common error this year relates to the Recovery Rebate Credit and the Child Tax Credit.  if that is what the error relates to, then no need to amend; the IRS has adjusted your return and refund.
