Do I use a 1040X to amend a social security number for one of my independents on my return I mailed in?

Unfortunately, since you mailed in your return, you will have to wait before you amend. The IRS (& State if any) will send you a letter asking about the incorrect SSN. It can take awhile to receive the letter because mailed returns take allot longer than e-filed returns.
