The church and church people sent us support to help us financially transition to a new state and new job, after my husband was unexpectedly laid off and subsequently unemployed for 7 months.

Assuming that neither of you were church employees, then the money was a gift and is not taxable.

You're correct - neither of us are employed by the church. My question is to whether or not this is still considered "income" even though it is not earned.

I also do not know if people who gave through the church will report their giving as a charitable donation for deductions, and if that effects our reporting or not.

Everything I've read online seems blurry and unclear on whether or not such "love offerings" from churches are taxable.
