Question

Does TurboTax charge to amend a return that was originally *not* filed using TurboTax?

I've been using TurboTax for 15+ years.  This year my daughter filed a tax return for the first time; because she has a very simple return, she was able to use the IRS's free-file tool, so used that instead of TurboTax.  However, after filing she realized she omitted income from a 1099-NEC, so now she needs to amend her return.

I know it is possible for her to use TurboTax to amend her return, but that she will need to enter all of her information as if she were doing it for the first time. What I can't figure out is whether there will be a charge, and if so how much.  This answer states clearly that there would be no charge if she already filed her taxes with TurboTax, but that isn't the case here.

Yes, it is correct that there is no charge when you used TurboTax for the original filing. If you did not use TurboTax, you will be charged for the original return.

I would try starting in the Free Edition since she did her original return in IRS Free-file. Re-create the return and then finalize it by choosing to print and mail.

Then start the amendment, the Form 1099-NEC may bump the return up to Deluxe, which would cost $59 to file.
