Doing 1040x -- change amount to be applied to 2021, or send a check?

In November got a revised 1099, which increases my 2020 taxes by $50.

I had used Turbotax Download/CD/Desktop to mail my original return. In that original, I had a $2000 overpayment, so I had $1990 applied to my 2021 taxes, and had $10 credited back to my checking so that I would know the return was processed.

To make the amended return I made a copy of the *.tax2020 file, opened that copy, and successfully got into the amend process. Where I got confused is that I started changing the amount to be applied to 2021 (line 36). This seemed to confuse things. I am thinking of starting over, keep $1990 to be applied to my 2021 taxes, and mail a $50 check with the 1040X to keep things simpler.

Are there suggestions or comments on the better way to do this? Thanks.

I did not think that was an option on an amended return, but if it is - get a check.   Since amended returns usually take about 6 months to process, but with COVID backlogs they are taking much longer - 8 months or more.

By the time it is processed you might have already filed your 2021 tax return by April 15, 2022.

II think that's the best way to do it. Keep it simple. Do not try to change the amount applied to 2021. The amount you specified on your original 2020 tax return has already been applied to 2021. Your amended return will not be processed by the time you file your 2021 tax return. You don't want to create any confusion about the amount applied from 2020.

any amount applied to next year on 1040-X has to come out of a refund shown on 1040-X.

you can't change what you put on your original 1040.

as suggested, due to IRS backlog, leave that amount Zero.
