Question

E-filed for 2019 and set up payment directly from my bank. Found deductions I'd missed, e-filed an amendment resulting in a decrease in tax. What now?

Will IRS extract incorrect payment from my bank then issue a refund for the difference? OR will IRS  extract the corrected amount? Or am I supposed to mail them a check for the corrected amount and they will not touch my bank account? Tubotax had me print out a 1040-V which seems to say I should send in a check.

Your amended return should show the payment from your original tax return on Form 1040-X line 16, and the amount of the decrease on lines 21 and 22. The IRS will take the payment amount from your original tax return from your bank account. After they process your amended return they will send you a check for the difference shown on Form 1040-X line 22. Even though you e-filed the amended return, it will take 4 months or more for the IRS to process it and send you your refund.
