we received the education credit for 5 years in error. We now have taxes due on our 2017 tax return. Does turbo tax help cover the taxes due or penalties, due to the error?

No, TurboTax is not going to pay the extra tax or penalty you owe for making your own mistake and claiming a credit more times than the tax law allowed. TurboTax's accuracy guarantee covers calculation errors--which you did not have. Your mistake was your own, which you pay for yourself. Sorry.
