Filed during the wrong year

Hello - I have a question about filing income for the wrong year.

I received an income payment on property on Jan 3rd 2024.   When I filed my 2023 taxes,  I included this income on my 2023 tax return.  I then paid taxes owed on 2023 which included this income.

Now that I am filing my 2024 tax returns, I realized my mistake.

How do i prove that I've already paid taxes on that income in order to avoid paying double?

You will need to amend your 2023 tax return to remove the income that should have been reported on your 2024 tax return. If you have a state return, you will need to amend that as well.  The links below provide guidance on starting a prior year amended return.

How do I amend my state tax return?

Then, you will need to prepare your 2024 including the income that was erroneously reported on your 2023 return.  Any taxes due on this income will be included correctly in your 2024 tax return.

Essentially, when your 2023 amended tax return is processed, you should get a refund for the overpayment of taxes and avoid paying tax on the same income twice.
