I haven't received a full state return for my 2018 or 2019 tax returns. I think it may be because I mistakenly filed for the wrong state in 2018,  I work in MA but live in RI and I believe I may have filed for RI. Which I think caused the issue for my 2019 return.  How would I go about fixing this? Should I fill out a 1040X and file that?

If the change originates on the federal return (for example, you need to add or change your W-2 information), amend your federal return (Form 1040X) before amending your state. This carries the information over into your state return.

Otherwise, you just have to amend the state return.

If you lived in RI and worked in MA, you will need to file a resident RI return including all your income for the year (including your MA wages) as that is the state where you live. You will need to file a nonresident Massachusetts return to claim the wages and any other income you earned in Massachusetts

How do I amend a prior-year state return?
