Filed my return getting 7079 back, amended and getting 3079 instead. When i amended it stated i was getting 3079 but wants a check for the 4k difference. Why?

I received the audit letter, so i haven't received the 7079. If i did i understand the 4k payment. What should i do when amending?

Once we have your facts straight, you need to move on to getting help. Let's start with the amended return. About Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Look at your line 18. Does it show 0 or $7079?

I'm a little confused. You filed an amended return before the original had processed? That should never be done because the IRS can audit and adjust your return. Line 18 is supposed to reflect what you actually received by the time the return was finished processing.

Which return is being audited, the original or the amended? If you haven't received the refund, the original probably didn't finish processing. If you filed a return showing you got a refund well then.... go to your online account and see what it shows for payments and amounts owed.

Once you know which return is being audited, what you filed on line 18, what your account shows, then you should head over to TurboTax Audit Support Center.

Thanks got helping! I did this because I received a letter stating I was having an audit and to review my return and if anything was wrong to amend it.
it said I was getting a refund of 3079 and then the next screen wanted me to set up payment for the 4k. I don’t owe 4k. That’s just the difference between the original and amended return. It’s acting as if I received the payment and owed them back 4k.
What do you think I should do at this point.

It depends. You may not receive your original refund since your return is being reviewed. In this case you can change your amendment after printing to show your original overpayment, line 18, was zero. The result will be you corrected refund of $3,079.

Also you can enter an explanation on page 2 indicating your changes and that the original refund was not received. This will make it quite clear to the IRS when the amendment is received.

If you receive the original refund while this is in process, you should not cash it, but call the IRS before returning it for the best address to return it. Use the number on the letter you received.
